Dear Cannon Parents,
In 2013, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 5 (HB 5), which made significant changes to curriculum and graduation requirements, as well as, the assessment program and accountability system. In addition to the new graduation requirements, HB 5 also includes a requirement for school districts to conduct a community or parent engagement survey and report results to the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The information collected in this survey will help us highlight areas of excellence, as well as recognize areas of growth as we strive to Build Excellent Schools Together.
The survey link included in this message may be used multiple times in the instance that you have students on different campuses and will be active from April 11 through May 6, 2016. Once you click on the link, you may select if you would like to complete the survey in English or Spanish.
Click here to take the HB 5 survey:http://www.k12insight.com/GCISD/ParentEngagementSurvey/2016.html
I want to thank you for your participation in this survey and your continued support of Cannon Elementary: A GCISD STEM School and GCISD.

This year, is planning for their family picnic to have a "country flair" and they would like for students & parents to wear country clothing to school on Friday. Bring on those boots, jeans & cowboy hats! The event will be outdoors from 6:00-8:00 pm. They will have hot dogs and other concessions for $1 each or families can bring their own picnic basket to enjoy. Country & Latino music, as well as games and even a petting zoo will entertain adults and kids alike! Please bring chairs and blankets for sitting outdoors. Please show your support of PTA by attending this event and/or volunteering for a shift to help out. Sign up here to volunteer to help!
Cannon Salsa Taste Off!
This month our design challenge has us turning up the heat! Gather your family around and use the Engineering Process to design a great salsa recipe to share at the Cannon Country Cookout--Salsa Taste Off on Friday, April 22nd!
Imagine: Create the best salsa for the Cannon Salsa Taste Off!
Plan: Research what makes a great salsa recipe and plan out your ingredients. Be creative! Think about the types of ingredients you could use that we've planted in our school garden!
Design: Using your iPad, record a 2-3 minute video explaining the steps used to make your recipe. (See the video example below)
Improve: Taste time! What does your salsa need more of?
Share: Bring your salsa and some chips to the Cannon Country Cook Off to enter it in the Salsa Taste Off!
Check out this video example of how to prepare salsa. Remember keep your video between 2-3 minutes in length and e-mail them to Mrs. Berumen! YOU just might see yourself on KCAN! :)
