Muddy Mats Properties of Matter
Our second grade engineers received a challenge today from Mrs. Blizzard she needs for us to engineer mats for our building. She is concerned that with our garden we may bring too much water into the building. She needs mats that soak up water, don't leak and won't slip on our floors. To accomplish this task we started today by looking at the properties of water with a penny and water drop experiment.

Rock Properties
Today we went on a rock hunt. They each picked a rock and then wrote all of the properties for their rock. They each shared their writings and then others tried to guess their rock from the properties.
We will be conducting our annual Walk to School event on Wednesday, October 7th. We would love to have our entire school participate in the Walk to School event. Please drop off your child at Grapevine Methodist Church Parking lot or Dogwood Dr (Across from Baylor) between 7:00-7:15 am. Staff will be waiting to walk with students. Parents are more than welcome to walk with us too. International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record-breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

September Book of the Month Design Challenge
Design a model of a plant that grows up in the garden OR create a model of an animal or insect that lives down in the dirt. Your above ground model should showcase a root system, stem, leaf and flower(s). If you choose to create an underground model it should showcase the insect or animal body parts along with its unique adaptations. Both models should be designed to stand upright by itself and be no larger than 12 inches x 8 inches in size.

‘Dads and Kids’ Pizza
Night!
FREE Pizza, Drinks and
Fun!
Fathers
and Father-figures,
On
Monday,
September 21st from 6:30-7:30pm
we will be having our 4th annual ‘Dads and Kids’ Pizza
Night at our school. You will meet here
at the school cafeteria at 6:30pm
for FREE pizza and drinks. At 7:00
we will have a presentation about our WATCH
D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) Program. WATCH
D.O.G.S.® is an innovative program being used by schools across
America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement
of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. Our goal is to have you spend at least one
day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an
extra set of eyes and ears.
Dads,
granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . this is your chance to
have a night out alone with your student in a fun atmosphere at school.
In
order to participate, you need to do two things:
1. Fill
out the bottom portion of this slip and
return it with your student (ASAP) saying that
you will attend the pizza night so we’ll have an accurate head count for the
food.
2. Mark your calendars, and
we’ll see you Monday,
September 21st from
6:30-7:30pm. Official WATCH D.O.G.S.® Uniform T-shirts for WatchDOGS will
be available for ($15) each.
Sincerely,
Mandy

This week second grade is learning what it means to be a good citizen. In engineering they were given the challenge of building an award. The awards are all different examples of good citizenship. They will be watching their classmates and select the most deserving scholar for the award. We can't wait to see the awards they engineer and the scholars they see as the most deserving of their awards. We will showcase the winners and their awards later this week.
