Mrs. Hall's Holiday Challenges

Mrs. Hall's class has had a great time this week with some fun engineering and writing challenges. Take a look at some of our work:

We worked with a team to see who could build the tallest decorated tree using 30 cups.

Mrs. Vorachard helped us use Lego WeDo Robotics to create a scene where Santa and his reindeer traveled around and around.

We wrote procedural text about how to decorate a Christmas tree and gave our writing to a buddy who followed our written instructions.  We learned that using precise language is important!

We engineered a parachute with a basket that would hold Santa and get him safely to the ground after his sleigh broke down.  Our new school is a great location to really test out our parachutes!

We will finish out the week with a read aloud from Mrs. Blizzard on Thursday and our annual holiday sing-along and party on Friday.  It has been a fun week!

Holiday Circuit Challenge

Today we completed a challenge that used play dough as a conductor and modeling clay as an insulator to create a holiday themed object that would light up.

Final Shoe Models

We used our testing to make good choices about the materials we used to create a model of a shoe sole.  We were all successful and some even used materials that would soak up the sweat from our foot!  Good thinking, Cubs!

Soles for Souls Engineering Challenge

In connection with our Soles for Souls shoe drive, second graders are engineering a model of the sole of a shoe. We have decided the sole of a shoe serves several purposes - to keep our feet dry and to help us from slipping on the floor.  Today we tested all of our materials to see which ones absorb water so we can make better decisions on which materials to use.

Playdough

Today we were able to have a final video call with Mrs. Walton. She showed us pictures of how the kids she works with used the playdough that we made.  One of her kids had a broken arm and was using the playdough to help strengthen her non-dominant hand.  We are so proud to have helped out with a real world problem!
