Big picture
You are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Cannon Elementary: A GCISD STEM School on Thursday, August 29 at 9 a.m. After a brief 30-minute ceremony, students and staff will lead guided tours through the new building.

As school will be in session, all visitors will be required to check-in and wear a visitors badge while they are in the building. In an effort to expedite the check-in process, please click here to RSVP so that we may have as many individuals pre-registered as possible. If you have not visited a GCISD campus prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, please arrive between 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. so that you may be checked-in by campus staff. All visitors are requested to bring their drivers license for the check-in process.

Arrival and Dismissal
Cannon Elementary has a parking lot! Please review the following information carefully, as there are several changes to the former Cannon drop off and pick up procedures. We will all hands on deck to help direct parents, as we adjust!
  1. Our bus drop-off will continue in the new bus lane that has been created at the new school, on the east side of the building. All daycare buses will also use this lane. Cars dropping off students are not allowed to use the bus circle. Staff parking is attached to the bus lane and are the only cars permitted to park in this lot.
  2. All students will be brought to the front of the building for dismissal. All students will either be released to a parent or placed in a car. Students will not be allowed to walk around the building to meet parents or cars. After all parties learn the new arrival and dismissal patterns the car lanes will be the most efficient route to drop off and retrieve your cubs. Please trust the process!
  3. The parking lot to the right of the amphitheater (when looking at Cannon) and in front of the Cub Cafe will be for staff parking ONLY. The parking lot in front of the main entrance will be for front office staff, PTA, teachers and visitor parking. Traffic patterns in this parking lot will be active AFTER arrival and dismissal procedures are complete. Student safety is our first priority and we cannot have cars pulling in or out of the parking areas during arrival/dismissal times. If you choose to park in the visitor parking, you will be directed to remain in the parking lot until all arrival and dismissal procedures are completed. Thank you for your assistance with this important safety feature. Cones will be set up to remind parents when the parking lot is closed for non-staff parking use.
  4. Parents enter our new car lane from W. College St. and must pull through the car lane until their student is dropped off/loaded into the car at the designated area near where new sidewalks will be available. PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF STUDENTS UNTIL YOU ARE IN THIS DESIGNATED AREA. We do not want students walking, without supervision, nor between any cars, in any areas around traffic areas. All cars will need to exit the parking lot and turn right onto W. College Street. Please pay careful attention to staff as they direct and support the new procedures to ensure safety and efficiency. See diagram below.

Cannon Safety & Security Procedures & Routines:

    • BRING A DRIVER'S LICENSE EACH TIME YOU VISIT: All visitors must enter the main entrance from the front of the building. There will be no permitted access from any other exterior door. All visitors will need to bring their driver's license to scan each time they come to visit the school. If you have anyone you are bringing with you to Cannon, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., please inform them to bring their driver's license. The front office staff will assist visitors with the scanning in our Raptor system.
    •  CHECKING OUT A STUDENT EARLY: If you decide to come to school to check out your child before the 2:55 p.m. GCISD elementary dismissal time, please allow us plenty of time to locate your child. It takes a while to locate students in a building as they are not always in their classroom. If you send a note requesting an early dismissal with your student in the morning, you will help eliminate the time spent waiting for us to locate your student. Also, we kindly ask if you need to pick up a child before our 2:55 p.m. dismissal, please do so before 2:30 p.m.
    • CHANGE IN DISMISSAL OR PICK UP: If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please notify the office by a phone call by at least 2:00 p.m. Teachers and our front office staff do not always have access to email or are busy teaching or helping others. A phone call is required. Sometimes we have only one person in the front office, so we want to provide ample time to be able to meet your needs.
CONVEY TO YOUR CHILD THE DAILY PICK UP PLAN: Now is a good time to establish the morning routine of telling your child how he/she will be going home at the end of the school day. Please do not instruct your child to call you after school. Our teachers and front office staff are responsible for many children and are required to be at an after-school duty. They are unable to assist your child with phone calls.
FORGET ME NOT: If you find your child has left an item at home that needs to be at school, we have "Forget Me Not Baskets" in the front vestibule where you can place the items. Come in the building, drop off the forgotten item in the appropriate grade level basket, and write your students name on the dry erase board. You may want to send an email to the teacher as well. This excludes iPads, Chromebooks, or eyeglasses; these items need to be brought into the office.
DOORS: All visitors must report to the front office at any time, even after school has been dismissed. All staff and students have been directed to not let anyone in the building at any time.

Help

It would be very helpful to us if the children had either headphones or earbuds.  We know they are not on the supply list but it is very helpful so the children do not need to hear what everyone else is working on.  We look forward to seeing all of you on Meet the Teacher.

Back to School Information

We look forward to meeting all of you soon.  We ask that you please bring all school supplies with you to meet the teacher, so we can get the rooms all set up for the first day.  Thanks

General Info

  • COMMUNICATION: We have a new GCISD administrative regulation governing our electronic communication with students. At Cannon, we are implementing a new practice with our CAN parents by requesting If you or your child need to communicate with your teacher, please use email, place a phone call to the school, or talk face-to-face. The teachers have been instructed to not share their personal cell phone numbers. This is to protect all parties involved.
  • As we get close to the start of school, it's important; we make sure your students have all the supplies and tools needed to be successful. If your child has a district-issued iPad/Chromebook or laptop, now is the time to look it over.
Most common things to look for when checking out your student's devices:
    1. Cracked or damaged screen
    2. Missing keys
    3. Lost chargers
Remember for district IPads crack screens while in the protective district case is free* to repair.
GCISD technology provides summer repair services, so act now to help eliminate any lost instructional time for device repairs at the start of school. Click the link below for information on summer device repair.
  • Parents! You can now download myschoolbucks at the apple or android store on your smart device. You can make online prepayments and view your child's transactions.
In addition to accepting cash and checks for school meals, GCISD offers parents the option of making online credit card payments for student meals through myschoolbucks.com. To set up an account, download the Parent Guide.
  • To better serve our students, GCISD technology has migrated all Student logins into Skyward to match their network logins. Students will no longer need to remember a separate login when trying to access Skyward. As a reminder, please encourage students to use Classlink to login. By using Classlink students will get instant access into all their district resources without having to remember passwords or links.

Earth Day & Natural Resources

Mrs. Hall's class had a great week exploring new technology as we learned more about protecting our environment, natural and manmade resources and recycling.  We used WeDo 2.0 to build a recycling truck and Specdrums to identify recyclable and non-recyclable materials around our home. The mini-spheros helped us sort actions that were helpful or harmful to our environment and finally we designed a Bloxels video game where our character captured natural or manmade materials.  What a fun week!

Natural Resources

Today we created video games using Bloxels that showed our characters finding man made or natural resources while they fought off enemies.

Natural Resources

Today we created a model house that would show what items could and could not be recycled.  We wanted to show people how to take care of their natural resources.  Then we coded the Specdrums to make the house model interactive.

Wednesday, April 24, 2019

Natural Resources

Today we looked at ways to protect our natural resources and then created games with helpful or harmful things for the environment.  We then used the Sphero  minis to play a game knocking out the harmful things.

Natural Resources

Today we used Lego Story Starters to create stop motion videos on how to protect the natural resources on earth.
